The Myspace juggernaut makes its next move, unveiling plans this week to allow bands to sell music straight from the wildly popular website. I think this is a pretty good and interesting idea, especially since the music pages of Myspace are one of the site's main assets, providing a good way to hear new stuff, not to mention (for bands) keeping in touch with fans in terms of posting songs, writing a blog, and sending out mass e-mails. And I think this is definitely the direction Myspace should be heading in (rather than their recent plans to put out a magazine, which seems totally at odds with what they are, i.e. a website). But it'll be interesting to see what the sales are, since most people go to Mspace to browse and download, but not to buy. I think big bands debuting songs will make some sales, but for the smaller bands, I'm not sure what the outcome will be, nor whether this will take a bite out of all of the sales iTunes is racking up. We'll see...
