Weeks go by without any news on the various eReader projects out there and then I go on vacation for a few days and come back to a slew of posts in my bloglines account about Sony's eReader and its competitor, the iLiad. So, let's take a look at what happened in my absence:
Let's start with Sony: The good news is that there appears to be a marketing maverick in their eReader division who - get this - actually wants to talk to customers. Hopefully they will be able to continue their vigilante-esque fight against Sony making a bad product before they get stopped by The Man.
The bad news here is that the eReader is getting delayed a bit longer. Although, perhaps this means that some of the customer feedback is being evaluated for last minute implementation.
Meanwhile, the iRex reader by iLiad is seeing the light of day a bit early - if you're a pilot. Engadget really hit the whole eReader issue dead on with this post:
Overall, we'd say the tech shows promise, but the public at large is best off waiting for the next generation. Color e-ink isn't terribly far off, DRM wars are yet to be resolved, and we just know some of y'all are holding up for Apple to get into the game, anyway.
The iRex's implementation in the aviation industry has me hoping for similar deals business adoptions in the future - perhaps this will allow the technology to work out those first generation growing pains without the users having to pay an exorbitant amount of money for a half-built product.
